5 tools to help improve your English writing skills

Here are some of the tools you can find online to help you develop your written English.

Grammar Girl

Grammar Girl is an excellent site to add to your favorites list. It features regular posts (and a podcast) explaining the rules behind punctuation, grammar, word usage and more. The creator Mignon Fogarty explains these concepts in a fun and conversational tone, offering useful ways to remember the peculiarities (sometimes irritating) of the English language.

Reverse Dictionary

Have you ever had the perfect word in mind, but couldn’'t remember? Reverse Dictionary is your new best friend. Just type a phrase or definition that describes the word you are looking for in the search bar and the Reverse Dictionary will display a list of possible matches. It is also a great tool for non-native speakers to explore synonyms and increase their vocabulary.

Grammarly

When it comes to checking grammar try Grammarly, a free Chrome extension that will scan your writing for grammatical errors and help teach you how to avoid such errors in the future. The extension captures more than 250 types of grammatical errors, as well as contextual spelling errors (write/right, affect/effect, etc.) and poor vocabulary usage. You can use Grammarly when writing emails, articles, social media posts and more.

Ginger

Like Grammarly, Ginger works to detect spelling and grammatical errors, and to help you learn from those mistakes. Non-native English speakers can benefit most from its learning center, which tracks your most common grammar clutter and offers personalized reports to show your progress over time.

Hemingway App

This free tool helps to reduce long and complex sentences to make your writing more direct. Offers suggestions for simplifying words, adverbs and avoiding the passive voice.
